Do American students have the global skills for the world of tomorrow? As part of a nationwide discussion of professional competencies, this symposium seeks to define the role of higher education, particularly the humanities, in preparing students for the global workplace. We will examine university curriculum and program planning methods and explore new opportunities for collaboration with the public and private sectors that foster mutually productive engagement, while preserving the integrity of academic disciplines. In this regard, we will discuss how government, industry, and academia can work together to promote a strong international work culture in the US, as well as how to sustain such efforts through institutional support. With these goals in mind, we have organized the conference around four central issues:
